Roomba is one of the most well-known brands for robot vacuums, likely because of how user-friendly their app is. Right now, you can get the iRobot Roomba j7 for $297 (originally $599.99), after a 50% discount from Amazon. This is the lowest price I’ve seen it go for, matching Black Friday prices. But is it a good fit for your home? That depends on your needs.
This iRobot Roomba j7 comes without two big features that would otherwise put the price over the $1,000 mark: a self-emptying base, which sells for $249 (you can always buy it separately down the road), and the ability to mop, which you’d find in the more expensive Combo j7 model.
If you don’t mind emptying the j7’s bin yourself, you can save yourself the extra money. The same goes for the mopping feature, although I’d say calling what the j7+ does “mopping” is a stretch anyway—it drags a damp cloth around, but it’s not good for cleaning up big messes or stains.
This Roomba has all the essential features you’d expect from a robot vacuum, though, including multi-floor mapping of your home, no-go zones, pet hair pick-up, the ability to program to run when you’re not home, and other features that you can check out in PCMag’s review of the j7+ (just remember the j7 doesn’t come with the self-emptying base). Pet owners will be happy to know this robot vacuum can detect pet waste on the floor to avoid a messy mishap.
The smart mapping on the j7 gets better the more you use it, and if you move furniture around, it will detect that and remember it for next time.
