The emphasis of World Wetlands Day on 2 February 2024 will be on the importance of these areas for boosting cities’ resilience against climate change and for improving human well-being. Rapid urban expansion in flood-prone zones, particularly in China (J. Rentschler et al. Nature 622, 87–92; 2023), is destroying and fragmenting urban wetlands that are crucial for both water retention and flood control.
