Urban tree planting is increasingly used to combat climate change: for example, the US Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service last year allocated more than US$1 billion to planting and maintaining trees in cities and towns. These programmes are particularly beneficial for low-income and marginalized urban communities, which disproportionately experience environmental and health issues (A. Hsu et al. Nature Commun. 12, 2721; 2023). But ensuring their long-term financial viability remains challenging.
