Overnight oats are a great way to make a simple chilled breakfast. But, let’s face it, they’re still oats, and oats need flavor assistance, and adding a dollop of jam can provide such assistance. If you open the fridge to reveal a nearly empty jam jar, and you might think, “Dang. I can’t flavor my oats now.” Turns out, you’d be seeing the jam jar as half-empty. Those scrapings of jam still pack plenty of flavor.
You actually have the perfect opportunity to clean out every last streak of jam from the jar, while simultaneously flavoring your oats. All you have to do is make your oats inside your “empty” jam jar.
I like Crofter’s jam and I reuse the jars, but the sharp shoulders on the jar catch a lot of precious material. If you’re a fan of reusing jam jars (like Bonne Maman jars), you know that you usually have to rinse them out with water to get that last bit of sticky residue. Making overnight oats in the jar replaces the rinsing step, and you get to enjoy your jam a little longer.
Add 3/4 cup of liquid to the jar (milk, oat milk, or water) and, depending on how thick you like the oatmeal, 1/2-3/4 cup of old-fashioned oats. The Kitchn suggests shaking the jar to release the jam bits, but I just give it a stir. I get an irrational flare up of discontent when oat flakes get stuck to the jar lid. Jam is water soluble and the leftover streaks and globs should dissolve easily as you stir the liquid over and around the jammy areas.

My jam jar had been scraped pretty well prior to making oats in it. Regrettably, I didn’t get the powerful raspberry flavor that I had hoped for. It was subtle, and I enjoyed it with some peanut powder for a PB&J oatmeal. However, for more jammy flavor I would suggest making your batch when you have a hefty tablespoon or so remaining in the jar for a real smack of jam flavor. (And if oats aren’t your thing, try cleaning out the jar with plain yogurt, or booze.)

- 1 jam jar with leftover jam scrapings (about a tablespoon)
- ¾ cup liquid (water or milk of choice)
- ¾ cup old fashioned oats
- 1 tablespoon of peanut powder
- 1 tablespoon greek yogurt
- 1 teaspoon honey
Add all of the ingredients to the jammy jar and stir. Leave in the refrigerator overnight. Stir again before eating the next morning.
