If you’re hosting a Super Bowl LVII party this Sunday, make sure you’re not serving any of these charcuterie sausages that were recalled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). According to the updated USDA recall, approximately 69,255 pounds of ready-to-eat sausage products have been recalled for the potential contamination of a dangerous bacterium.
A routine inspection by the Food Safety and Inspection Service found Listeria monocytogenes on surfaces the sausages were in contact with, according to the recall. If it’s consumed, the bacteria can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that “primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns,” according to the recall. People outside those groups can experience less severe symptoms, like “mild food poisoning symptoms like diarrhea and fever, and usually recover without treatment,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

What to do with the recalled meats?
Check if the meats in your fridge match the description above. The FSIS urges you not to consume them and to toss the meats out immediately or return them to where you bought them. If you consumed them and are concerned about your health, the FSIS recommends you contact a healthcare provider. If you had them in your fridge, make sure to clean any surfaces they may have been in contact with, since they survive and spread in cold conditions.
