The weirdest thing about the Peak Streaming Era is that there are TV shows that have been running for years that I, a person who reads entertainment websites for fun and listens to podcasts about TV, have never heard of.
A recent example of this is Yellowstone, a dark contemporary drama about a family of cattle ranchers who must defend their territory against all sorts of nefarious threats. How I only recently learned about the cattle industry’s answer to The Sopranos—a four-seasons-old show that stars Kevin Freakin’ Costner no less—is a mystery to m…oh I see, it’s on the Paramount Network, a cable channel I only learned exists shortly before writing this sentence.
Yellowstone is even popular enough that it’s getting a streaming-only spinoff on Paramount+, which is, at least, a demonstrably extant venue for TV shows I do realize that people watch (granted, most of them have the words “Star Trek” in the title). 1883 (Dec. 19) explores the origins of the Dutton family’s cattle dynasty, following them on their journey into the “untamed” west. In yet more evidence this show is Not for Me, it stars married country singers Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, a fact that is probably deeply exciting to much of the series’ prospective audience. Which is fine! There’s definitely enough TV out there to go around. (And hey, Billy Bob Thornton and Sam Elliot costar, that’s not nothing.)
Amid the other typically slim pickings on the Viacom-owned streaming service in December: The premiere of Queen of the Universe (Dec. 2), a drag singing competition series spun off of RuPaul’s Drag Race, hosted by Drag Race UK’s Graham Norton; a Rugrats holiday special (Dec. 2); and the holiday film Christmas Takes Flight (Dec. 19), which is about a “handsome but frugal airline CEO” who takes over a small regional carrier and plans to cut their annual Christmas charity event, leaving it up to the former owner’s daughter to save the day and bring back the spirit of the season. (Now I kind of understand why so many people watch these things, and why Hallmark makes 30 of them every year.)
