Netflix is having a rough go in 2022—falling stock, high-profile cancellations, and a refusal to just renew The Sandman already— but I can’t quit them yet, not when they’re premiering a new stop-motion animated feature from the director of Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
When does Wendell & Wild come out?
Table of Contents
Animation nerds (me) have been anticipating the release of Wendell & Wild (Oct. 28) for years (stop-motion movies take a long time to make) less for the high-profile co-writer in Jordan Peele than because it’s the first movie from director Henry Selick since the release of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline way back in 2009. Despite being a certified animation genius (with The Nightmare Before Christmas as his thesis), Selick has struggled for years to get a film off the ground, and I’m glad Netflix opened its then-deep pockets for him. Hopefully the involvement of Peele, whose horror bonafides suggest he’ll be a good match with the director’s spooktacular vibes, satisfies viewers enough that we don’t have to wait 13 years for Selick’s next one.
But wait, there’s more: Netflix also has a lot else to recommend on its wide-ranging list of new stuff.
Nailed It! (Oct. 5) is back for a new season. Time to disassociate like a motherfucker!
Mr. Harrigan’s Phone (Oct. 5) is an adaptation of the Stephen King short story about a boy who communicates with a dead man using an iPhone. (Nice product placement if you can get it).
Derry Girls (Oct. 7) returns for its final season, and if you aren’t watching this crude, hilarious, and heartfelt ‘80s Northern Ireland-set British import, you have real small-T troubles. (Get on it—at six episodes per season, you’ll be done all too soon.)

The Mole (Oct. 7) reboots the early 2000s reality series of the same name with a new concept that sees competitors contributing to a pot of cash that will grow larger as they complete missions—but someone on the inside is trying to sabotage them.
Luckiest Girl Alive (Oct. 7) stars Mila Kunis as an NYC writer whose past becomes the subject of a true crime documentary. It’s based on the novel by Jessica Knoll.
Conversations With a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes (Oct. 7) can be considered study material for true crime types actually interested in watching Ryan Murphy’s just-released Dahmer series starring Evan Peters. (I’ll pass.)
Easy Bake Battle (Oct. 12) is a new cooking competition that sadly does not require contestants to complete the challenges using only an Easy Bake Oven. (Can we get on that idea, Discovery+?)
Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities (Oct. 25) is a new horror anthology series in which the lauded filmmaker lends his cachet to fellow directors, including Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) and Vincenzo Natali (Cube), releasing their spooky short films under his banner.
The Good Nurse (Oct. 26) is a true-crime thriller starring Jessica Chastain as an ICU nurse who begins to suspect her supportive colleague (Eddie Redmayne) might be responsible for a string of patient deaths. Because in 2022, a movie featuring two recent Oscar winners and based on an acclaimed non-fiction book can just drop out of nowhere.
Big Mouth (Oct. 28) returns for a sixth season of increasingly off-putting recreations of my pubertal angst.
Here’s everything else coming to Netflix in October—and what’s leaving, including the entire run of Schitt’s Creek (pour one out for the show that got us all through the early pandemic—and then plan your rewatch on Hulu.)
