The funny thing about Netflix’s original streaming content: All of it basically ceases to exist roughly one week after it drops on the service.
Oh, all of it is still there, of course, but when you’re spending $17 billion a year on content (and also thinking of it as “content”), that’s, well, a lot of content. Especially when you’ve trained your audience to expect every episode to drop at once, everything becomes about what’s New and Next and In the Zeitgeist as the old stuff drops out of the algorithm.
Which is fine when your show is new. But usually when a show makes a splash, Netflix likes to immediately announce a second season. And because Netflix gets to define what a “splash” looks like given that they don’t release viewing numbers, it seems like lots of stuff gets picked up for a second or third season right away. And then it takes a year or more for that new season to actually get produced, and by the time it arrives on Netflix, well, the first season that caught 120 seconds of everyone’s attention has since ceased to exist. (See above.)
In October, Netflix is dropping new seasons of a bunch of those shows that have ceased to exist since last year. It will be interesting to see how many of them exist again. The Baby-Sitters Club (Oct. 11—my daughter is excited about this one, at least), Another Life (Oct. 1—remember how Katie Sackhoff was cast in another sci-fi show, except this one is apparently rather bad?), You (Oct. 15—this Lifetime castoff is probably still going strong, actually), and Locke & Key (Oct. 22—I love these comics and yet totally forgot the show existed) will all test the fidelity of your long-term memory soon.
Of course, I know you didn’t forget about Sexy Beasts, and not only because the first season is less than four months old. One doesn’t just forget a dating show that might as well have the tagline “Tell me you’re a furry without telling me you’re a furry.” (No offense to furries. Everyone deserves a hot dating show.) Where’s what else you can expect from Netflix soon.
