Say what you will about Netflix (and there’s a lot to say, especially this week), you have to give the streamer credit: They may be $18.5 billion in debt, but they’ve spent a lot of that money on the kind of niche content that would never have a corgi’s chance in the vacuum of space being produced anywhere else.
Take, for example, the live-action reboot of Cowboy Bebop, a landmark ‘90s anime that hit big in the US that definitely does not need to exist—and yet it looks pretty cool, and I’m pretty glad that it does. At least for now. Maybe once the John Cho-starring cross-cultural, cross-genre experiment actually premieres on Nov. 19, I’ll feel differently. 3-2-1, let’s jam, hopefully.
And that’s hardly the only big bet Netflix is making in November. I’m also intrigued by Lin Manuel-Miranda’s (I know, I know) kinda/sorta biopic of the playwright Johnathan Larson. tick, tick…BOOM! (Nov. 19) is a stage-to-screen adaptation of the Rent creator’s autobiographical musical, and you’re put off by the idea that an unknown writer’s first attempt at writing a Broadway show was a musical biopic about himself, maybe musical theater isn’t for you.
I’m also looking forward to more foul-mouth, hard middle school truths in the fifth season of Big Mouth (Nov. 5), the all-Black revenge western The Harder They Fall (Nov. 3), and Love Hard (Nov. 5), another holiday movie that appears to attempt to use catfishing as a heartwarming romantic plot point. There’s also a new season of Tiger King (Nov. 17), but I don’t think that toxic trash fire needs any more fuel from me—sorry, no judgement. (OK, a little judgement.)
