The Peak Streaming era may be coming to an end—tumult at HBO Max, belt tightening at Paramount+, whatever is happening with Hulu—but Netflix still has very deep pockets. Deep enough to attract the sort of star power that used to cost $20 million per movie. Star power the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jennifer Lopez.
Both bankable actors are coming to Netflix in May. Schwarzenegger will star in FUBAR (May 25), a series about a father and daughter who discover they’re both CIA agents and have been needlessly hiding their true selves from one another for years. They team up, trying to keep a lid on their family drama while saving the world (sounds a lot like Alias to me, but whatever).
Lopez, meanwhile, is reverting to the mean (thrillers about tough women) with The Mother (May 12), in which she plays an assassin who has been living off the grid for years who is forced out of hiding to save her child. Not exactly a novel premise either, but “vengeance is a mother” is admittedly a good tagline—and it’s from Niki Caro, who directed the Oscar-nominated Whale Rider, which is something.
There are some other goodies coming in May too, including the Bridgerton spinoff Queen Charlotte (May 4). The third season of the unhinged sketch comedy show I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson arrives may 30 to make certain Lifehacker staffers (Claire Lower) very happy. You can also catch new comedy specials from Wanda Sykes (May 23) and Hannah Gadsby (May 9).
And fans of soothing background TV will no doubt welcome the return of Queer Eye (season 7 premieres May 12) and Great British Baking Show: Juniors (May 7).
Here’s everything else coming to (and leaving) Netflix in May.
