Hype is one thing; bad buzz is another. The word on HBO’s new series The Idol, premiering on HBO and the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max on June 4, has definitely been trending toward the latter. Co-created by Euphoria’s Sam Levinson, the fictional music industry exposé stars Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Lily-Rose “Yes, Johnny’s Daughter” Depp; Depp plays a pop star who falls under the sway of Tesfaye’s charismatic, abusive cult leader character.
The show’s teaser trailer promises all the glitz, sex, and grit of Euphoria, but behind the scenes, things have been tumultuous. Original executive producer Amy Seinmetz (The Girlfriend Experience) was originally set to direct every episode but left the show last April under a cloud of mystery; later, claims emerged that Levinson and Tesfaye had created a toxic environment on set and that the show—originally pitched as an empowering coming-of-age story for Depp’s protagonist—has swerved into darker, misogynistic territory. Maybe it will be good, or maybe it will be the kind of thing you need to watch just so you can understand the vitriol everyone else is throwing its way.
If you’re looking for a more wholesome hate-watch opportunity, Sex & the City revival And Just Like That… is returning for a second Samantha-less season on June 22. Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and the new ones the show thinks people care about are all back, including everyone’s favorite podcaster-turned-famous comedian somehow, Che Diaz! Ugh! I’m not usually a proponent of spending your one life on this earth watching a television show you despise, and yet I can’t quit gawking at the increasingly unhinged actions of this truly deplorable cast of characters. Can a hate watch also be a comfort watch? Yes.
Here’s everything else coming to Max in June, including new seasons of Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens (June 15) and The Righteous Gemstones (June 18), and the premiere of American Pain (June 8), a documentary about the opioid epidemic. For the second month in a row, Warner Bros. Discovery has not released a list of the programming will soon be leaving the streaming service, so maybe they’ve decided that’s bad for business.
