What’s New on HBO Max in April 2021

The Nevers, HBO’s next bid for genre TV dominance, premieres April 11, carrying with it hopes it will generate, if not a Game of Thrones-level pop culture impact, than at least Lovecraft Country-level buzz. Unfortunately, the streamer hasn’t been able to generate any excitement based on the pedigree of its creative team, given the show was created (and the first season shepherded) by the now thoroughly canceled Joss Whedon who was fired left the production last year.

The trailer looks appealing enough—dig that lush Victorian era production design—and promises a plot filled with deep mythology and women punching things more than a tad reminiscent of the many flashback-heavy episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I think it has a good shot of capturing eyeballs, given the warm reception that has greeted other recent series in a vaguely similar vein (persecuted underdogs with magical powers), from Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy and The Irregulars to the aforementioned Lovecraft Country.

HBO is also still trying to win your monthly fee by dropping new films on the service for a month, even as they enter theaters, and in April they are offering up Mortal Kombat (April 16), a second stab (ahem) at launching a film franchise based on the series of ultra-gory fighting games. This one looks extremely faithful to the source material, which is to say it appears to be about a fighting tournament populated by a bunch of grotesque-looking caricatures with supernatural powers and goofy monikers to match, who will stand around introducing themselves before they commence with killing one another. I may sound like I am suggesting this is a bad thing, but it is not. It is Mortal Kombat.
