Power Consumption Surged To 18% In August 2021 Amid Growing Economic Activities

Power consumption went up in August 2021 due to easing of lockdownsPower consumption in the country witnessed a spike in August 2021 as it grew 18.6 per cent to touch 129 billion units (BU) as easing of lockdowns in several states led to increased economic activities.According to data released by the Ministry of Power, electricity consumption in August 2020 was 109.21 BU.The highest supply in a day was 196.24 gega watt (GW) in August 2021, which was 17.1 per cent higher compared to the corresponding period last year.In August 2020, the peak demand was 167.52 GW, lower than 177.52 GW during August 2019, thus reflecting the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on power consumption.In March 2020, a nation-wide lockdown was imposed to limit the spread of the infection. It was gradually lifted in a phased manner by September 2020, during which power consumption had been affected due to lack of professional and commercial activities.The power demand had been affected from April 2021 after lockdowns were imposed in many states again due to the outbreak of the second wave of the pandemic across the country.The second wave hit the economic recovery process and impacted commercial and industrial power demand.
