Government has urged people to buy hallmarked jewellery on occasion of DhanterasAs Diwali festivities kicked off with the festival of Dhanteras on Tuesday, Government has urged upon customers across the country to ensure that they buy only hallmarked jewellery.Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said that while people purchase gold on the occasion of Dhanteras, as it is considered auspicious to do so, it is important to have knowledge of how to ensure the purity of gold they are purchasing, so that they get value for money.The government’s appeal has come as with effect from June 23, 2021, hallmarking has been made mandatory in 256 districts of the country for 14, 18 as well as 22 karats of gold jewellery and artefacts.The earmarked districts are those where there is at least one assaying and hallmarking centre.Hallmarked jewellery can be sold only by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) registered jewellers and their details can be obtained from the BIS website.
