India’s trade deficit in January touched $17.42 billionNEW DELHI: India’s merchandise trade deficit in January touched $17.42 billion, while exports rose $34.50 billion from $27.54 billion of the corresponding period of last year.Imports on the other hand, went up to $51.93 billion in January from $42.03 billion of last year, commerce ministry data released today, said.Merchandise imports in January 2022 saw an increase of 23.54 per cent over imports in January 2021. Imports in January 2022 registered a positive growth of 26.19 per cent in comparison to January 2020.Cumulatively, exports increased by 46.73 per cent to $335.88 billion during April 2021-January 2022, from $228.92 billion in the corresponding period a year ago.Imports during the April-January period expanded by 62.65 per cent to $495.75 billion. Trade deficit stood at $159.87 billion during the ten-month period as against $75.87 billion in the same period a year earlier.
