I love PSVR. The exclusives are excellent, as is the ability to play PlayStation games on a giant floating virtual screen. But I will admit, the hardware can’t compete in the 2022 VR space. Against tech from Meta and HTC, it’s the perfect time for PlayStation VR 2 to launch. And while we won’t see it until sometime early next year, we can start securing our spot right now (as long as we’re chosen).

What’s new with PS VR2?

Sony’s PS VR2 is a considerable upgrade from the original PlayStation VR. The new headset bumps the resolution from 960 x 1080 to 2000 x 2040 (4K), supports HDR, and increases the field of view from 100˚ to 110˚. It also supports eye tracking for realistic eye movements, and Tempest 3D audio. Its inside-out tracking system eliminates the need for a camera, which should make setup so much easier.

Of course, the even bigger upgrade is to the controllers. While PS VR used 2010’s PlayStation Move controllers, PS VR2’s controllers are designed for VR, packing finger-touch detection, adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, and joysticks (thank god) into a design familiar to anyone who has used a modern VR system.

It won’t come cheap, though. The system launches at $550, and requires a PS5 to use. All in, that’s $950 or $1,050 to enjoy the latest from Sony’s VR offerings. There’s no doubt the PS VR2 is a worthy upgrade over the original, but it’s a pricey one at that. As someone that doesn’t have a PS5 yet, the sheer cost to entry for PS VR2 is a little intimidating. At least getting in line to pre-order one is free, though.

How to pre-order PS VR2

Right now, only Sony is running pre-orders for PS VR2, so you won’t be able to secure one at a retail location. In addition, the pre-orders are only for those who register with Sony. You can’t roll up to the PlayStation store’s website and expect to pre-order the system, so if you’re interested, register ASAP.

To register for PS VR2 pre-order, go to the official PlayStation VR2 website here, and click “Register to pre-order.” Sign in with your PSN account (I had to complete a CAPTCHA puzzle to continue), then click “Register Now.” Once registered, all you need to do is wait. If you’re selected, you’ll receive an email from PlayStation with instructions on how to pre-order your PS VR2.
