Reckitt, one of the main formula manufacturers in the U.S., announced a voluntary recall for two batches of their infant formula for the possibility of cross-contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii, a potentially dangerous bacteria. The company says it is recalling its Enfamil ProSobee Simply Plant-Based Infant Formula “out of an abundance of caution.”

The company’s recall says it has tested the product and found it didn’t contain contaminants and has not received any reports of adverse consumer reactions to date; it also says a material from a third party was the root cause of the bacterium, and it is no longer sourcing that material from the supplier.

What Enfamil formula is being recalled?

The recall affects 145,000 12.9-ounce cans that were manufactured between August 2022 and September 2022 and were distributed through retail stores nationwide in the U.S., Guam, and Puerto Rico. The cans have the following batch numbers on the bottom of the can: ZL2HZF and ZL2HZZ. Their UPC Code is 300871214415. Their “Use By Date” is March 1, 2024. Here is a picture of the product.

According to the recall, Cronobacter bacteria can cause severe, life-threatening infections or meningitis. Symptoms of sepsis and meningitis may include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice (yellow skin and whites of the eyes), grunting breaths, and abnormal movements. An infection may cause bowel damage and may spread through the blood to other parts of the body.

What to do if you have the recalled formula

The recall recommends you dispose of or return the formula to the place of purchase for a full refund. If you have any questions, you can consult your pediatrician or contact the company at 1-800-479-0551 24/7 or by email at consumer.relations@rb.com for any questions.
