COVID-19 vaccines are getting easier to find. As of a few weeks ago, all adults in the U.S. are eligible to make vaccine appointments, no matter what state you live in. And now, several pharmacy chains are offering walk-ins and same-day appointments at most of their locations.
President Biden announced this week that he is ordering pharmacies that get their vaccines from the federal government to start offering walk-in appointments. Thousands of pharmacies participate in this program, including many major chains. You can find a list of them here; they include CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Albertsons (including Safeway), Rite Aid, Kroger, Costco, H-E-B, Publix, Topco, and more.
Not every location will be offering walk-ins every day, but when you check your local pharmacy’s availability, you may very well notice that walk-ins are available. Some of the pharmacies also offer appointments the same day or even within the same hour you book your appointment, so people are increasingly able to get the vaccine on short notice.
A few of the chains have made their own announcements:
- CVS offers walk-ins at “select locations,” reportedly 8,300 of their 9,900 locations.
- Walgreens now offers same-day appointments at all their pharmacies, and walk-ins at select locations.
- All Walmart and Sam’s Club locations now offer walk-ins. (A Sam’s Club membership is not required to get a vaccine.) Appointments are also available.

To find a walk-in near you, check each pharmacy’s information. The federal program also includes some independent pharmacies and small chains. State-run clinics often offer walk-ins too, so check availability near you. Getting a vaccine may be easier than you expected.
