Before there was The Rings of Power, The Wheel of Time, or The House of the Dragon, there was The Witcher, the first post-Game of Thrones fantasy epic to flirt with widespread success. If Netflix’s adaptation of the Andrzej Sapkowski novels and video game series never quite captured the zeitgeist, it has remained popular enough to spawn two additional seasons to date—if not so popular as to keep its lead actor.
Sadly for fans of bad wigs, Henry Cavill will indeed be laying down his bloodstained sword at the end of season three of the series, the second half of which lands on Netflix on July 27. The producers having announced an intention to recast the pivotal role of monster hunter Geralt of Rivia with Liam Hemsworth. Depending on which rumors you listen to, Cavill may be leaving because the show isn’t faithful enough to the franchise’s origins. Whatever the reason, the trailer promises a lot of monstrous action before he departs.
Also arriving during what seems to be a rather light month for the streaming series: They Cloned Tyrone (July 21), a ridiculously fun looking sci-fi conspiracy thriller comedy starring John Boyega as a dude who discovers a government cloning conspiracy. Co-written and directed by Juel Taylor (writer of Creed II) and intended as an homage to blaxsploitation films of the 1970s, it looks very much in the same vein as Boyega’s breakout Attack the Block.
Here’s everything else coming to Netflix in July, including the launch of the fifth of a planned seven seasons of animated fantasy series The Dragon Prince (premiere date TBD as of this writing).
