Netflix has been killing it will original animated features lately, from the Oscar-nominated Over the Moon to the zany apocalyptic surprises of The Mitchells vs. the Machines. In June, they’re trying again with the premiere of Wish Dragon, a new Chinese-American co-production that’s trying so hard to recreate the pop-culture zip of Disney’s Aladdin that if you play the trailer backwards, I’m pretty sure you can hear the spirit of Robin Williams doing celebrity impressions from beyond the grave.

Like Over the Moon, which was based on an ancient Chinese legend, Wish Dragon reflects the fact that animated features—not to mention Netflix—are an increasingly global business. Though written and directed by American author Chris Appelhans, the film was produced in China, features a Chinese voice cast, and is set in modern-day Shanghai. The story feels less culturally specific—a hapless, working-class loser finds a magic lamp from which springs a cynical, smart-mouthed magical dragon named Cho (voiced by Harold & Kumar’s John Cho) that grants his wishes and helps him reconnect with his childhood best friend (in-between dropping one-liners). It looks…fine! I imagine I will soon be watching it with my kids, and the prospect doesn’t fill me with dread.

Also arriving in June is Sweet Tooth (June 4), a new series based on a celebrated comic by writer/artist Jeff Lemire that has been described asMad Max meets Bambi.” In it, there’s a post-apocalyptic world in which a catastrophe known as “the great crumble” has resulted in the appearance of half-human/half-animal hybrid creatures (go with it), a young deer-boy named Gus leaves the friendly confines of his sheltered forest to explore a wider world.

June’s other standout new additions are a bit less flashy. Comedian Kevin Hart stars in Fatherhood (June 18), a heartfelt comedy-drama about loss and parenting from director Paul Weitz (About a Boy). International hit Lupin (June 11) returns with more episodes, as does the late-lamented Kim’s Convenience (June 2). There’s a documentary called Kitty Love: An Homage to Cats (June 5), which seems self-explanatory. Liam Neeson does his survival thing as a rugged rescue trucker in The Ice Road (June 25).

And then there’s America: The Motion Picture, an animated film in which “a chainsaw-wielding George Washington (voiced by Channing Tatum) teams with beer-loving bro Sam Adams (Simon Pegg) to take down the Brits.” (So I lied, that last one is pretty flashy after all.)

Here’s everything else coming to (and leaving) Netflix in June.
