Hollywood seems to have the comic book movie down, but when it comes to adapting graphic novels as TV series, it’s still very much a mixed bag. For every The Umbrella Academy, there’s a Jupiter’s Legacy. For every Doom Patrol, there’s an Iron Fist. For every The Walking Dead, there’s the later seasons of The Walking Dead.

In September, yet another long-gestating graphic novel adaptation escapes from development hell and arrives on FX on Hulu, and while it’s still too soon to say whether it will be worth the wait, the trailer looks pretty dang promising.

As you probably gleaned, Y: The Last Man (Sept. 13), based on the 60-issue mid-aughts comics created by Brian K. Vaughan (Saga) and Pia Guerra, is one of them post-apocalyptic jobbies—said apocalypse in this case being the sudden, unexplained death of every living thing on Earth with a Y chromosome (sucks to be me). The surviving women—the cast includes familiar faces like Diane Lane, Olivia Thirlby, and Amber Tamblyn—struggle to bring order to a suddenly chaotic world while piecing together what happened, a mission made all the more fraught by the sudden appearance of the last dude on the planet, Yorick (Ben Schnetzer) and his pet monkey Ampersand. How did these guys survive? Well, that’s the big why, isn’t it? (You see what they did there, of course.)

Y: The Last Man was justifiably acclaimed in its day, but like any story so focused on gender and sexual politics, it hasn’t all aged well—never mind its status as a feminist text; the book sidesteps questions of the place of transgender men in its brave new world—but these are matters the creators of the series have vowed to address. For one thing, a significant transgender character has been added to the cast. Here’s hoping it does the job well, as the trailer seems to indicate they’ve gotten the rest of the adaptation right.

The month’s other big premiere is a Hulu Original: The Premise (Sept. 16), a half-hour anthology series created and hosted by The Office writer/star B.J. Novak. The streamer bills it as “bold and provocative,” promising “the curated collection of character-driven episodes challenges our shared morality tales, choosing art over argument, as it engages with the most relevant and meaningful issues of the modern era.” If that sounds mega-pretentious to you, perhaps you read Novak’s collection of New Yorker-approved short stories. Still, I’ll give it a go.
