Excessive caution over diagnostic labels could limit opportunities to treat people who seek help for behavioural addictions (see J. Billieux et al. Nature 611, 665; 2022). To improve their well-being and obtain more information in the absence of diagnostic criteria, we recommend a research approach involving the active participation help-seekers. This promotes the collection of replicable data on the existence, course, prevention and cessation of their behaviours.
