About 10,500 units of stainless steel cups and bottles have been voluntarily recalled by Green Sprouts, a manufacturer of reusable baby products, over a possible lead poisoning hazard. The recalled Green Sprouts bottles have been sold at major retailers, including Whole Foods stores nationwide, and online at Amazon, Target, Buy Buy Baby, and Bed Bath & Beyond from January 2020 through September 2022 for between $14 and $19.

Lead is poisonous to anyone who handles it and touches their eyes, nose, or mouth, or if it is ingested. The metal is especially harmful to children, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The poisonous metal exposure can cause a range of adverse health effects, including developmental delays and learning disabilities in children.

What is the recall for?

According to the alert from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the bottom base of the products can break off, exposing a solder dot that contains lead and poses a lead-poisoning hazard to whoever uses the product.

The CPSC received seven reports of the base detaching from the bottles and exposing the solder dot to the costumers. Green Sprouts says the company made the voluntary recall after they were aware the cups contained lead. There have been no official injuries reported to the CPSC so far regarding the recall.

Which Green Sprouts bottle products are recalled?

The following are the three recalled products with the name, size, description, and tracking number, which is found printed on the bottom of the bottle:

  • Sprout Ware Sippy Cup made from Plants and Stainless Steel, 6 oz, Stainless Steel Sippy Cup, 29218V06985 or 35719V06985
  • Sprout Ware Sip & Straw Cup made from Plants and Stainless Steel, 6 oz, Stainless Steel Sip & Straw Cup, 33020V06985
  • Sprout Ware Straw Bottle made from Plants and Stainless Steel, 8 oz, Stainless Steel Straw Bottle, 29218V06985 or 35719V06985

The stainless steel bottles come with one out of three types of closures—either a silicone sippy spout with colored plastic lid, collar and handles; a silicone sippy spout with colored SproutWare lid, collar and handles; or a silicone straw with SproutWare screw-on flip cap. According to the company alert, all stainless-steel bottles with a removable base cover are affected, including the colors aqua, pink, green, navy, and grey.
