Today is Global Running Day, a worldwide event created to celebrate running and get more people moving generally. This year, all of the official events are virtual, so here’s our rundown of the different ways you can participate. Some are just for today, and others give you the option to participate any time this week.

The NYRR Virtual Global Running Day 1M

The main event is a free virtual race held by the New York Road Runners club and Strava. Register on the website and compete the event by logging a one-mile distance in the app, setting it to public, and tagging it as a race. You must run the mile between June 1 and June 6, 2021 for it to “count.”

The World River Run

From June 2 to June 5 (World Environment Day), you can dedicate your run to a river. Sign up on the website and you’ll get a virtual race bib and a completion certificate. The idea is to post about both your run and your river online in order to “celebrate the beauty and value of our rivers.”

The Global Running Day 5K with Meb Keflezighi

This virtual race aims to be as close to a live event as you can get with people running all across the world. It occurs at a specific time—7 p.m.–8 p.m. ET (they note EST on the website, but giving Daylight Saving Time is in effect, that’s certainly supposed to be EDT). Sign up on the website and you’ll be able to access an audio livestream with marathon legend Meb Keflezighi and podcaster Ali Feller while you run, accessible through the Charge app.

The Lululemon Global Running Day Challenge

Want something that feels a little less like a race? Lululemon is sponsoring a Strava challenge that requires you to do nothing more than log a run, walk, or wheelchair activity that lasts at least 10 minutes. Sign up for that one here.

Get a discount on a future race

If you have your eye on a specific race you’d like to run in the future, today is a great time to see if they’re having a flash sale. The Rock N Roll series is offering discounts of up to $35 on race registrations, but the sale only lasts until midnight Pacific time tonight. Some smaller races are offering discounts, too; check your favorites or scan this Facebook group for tips.
