While 2021 has been great for Peloton’s profits—including posting their first $1 billion quarter ever—it hasn’t been as good on safety. It started in February, when the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received a report that a three-year-old suffered a “significant brain injury” after an accident on one of their treadmills, followed by a report a month later linking a different Peloton treadmill model with the death of a child.

After spending April pushing back against a request from the CPSC to recall its Tread+ treadmill, Peloton has backpedaled, issuing a voluntary recall for both of its treadmill products reportedly causing injuries. Here’s how to know if yours is part of the recall, and if so, how to get a refund.

Which treadmills are part of the recall?

There are two models involved with Peloton’s treadmill recall: The Tread and the Tread+. Here are the specifics on each recalled product:

The Tread

  • Model number: TR02 (printed on a black sticker located on the end cap in the front of the treadmill deck)
  • Reason for recall: The touchscreen on the treadmill can detach and fall, posing a risk of injury to consumers
  • Injuries/deaths: No injuries reported in the U.S., but there have been reports of minor injuries such as abrasions, minor cuts, and bruises in Canada, and the United Kingdom
  • Units being recalled: Around 1,050 in the United States, and an additional 5,400 in Canada
  • Recall number: 21-129
  • Sales period: November 2020 through March 2021 via limited invitation-only release online at onepeloton.com and at Peloton showrooms
  • Cost: $2,495

The Tread+

  • Model number: TR01 (printed on a black sticker located on the end cap in the front of the treadmill deck)
  • Reason for recall: Adult users, children, pets, and objects can be pulled underneath the rear of the treadmill
  • Injuries/deaths: Death of one six-year-old; 72 additional reports of injuries
  • Units being recalled: Approximately 125,000
  • Recall number: 21-128
  • Sales period: September 2018 through April 2021 online at onepeloton.com and at Peloton showrooms
  • Cost: $4,295

How to get a refund for a recalled treadmill

If you have one of the recalled treadmills, here’s how you can get a refund o repair (only available on the Tread models), along with other safety instructions from the CPSC:

The Tread

  • Stop using the recalled treadmill immediately.
  • Contact Peloton for a full refund.
  • Consumers who do not want a refund the option of waiting for a free inspection and repair that will secure the touchscreen to the treadmill to help prevent future incidents.
  • CPSC and Peloton will provide an update when a timeline on that repair is made available.

The Tread+

  • Stop using the recalled Tread+ immediately.
  • Contact Peloton for a full refund until November 6, 2022.
  • Consumers who return the Tread+ treadmill after that date will receive a partial refund.
  • Consumers who do not want a refund have the option of a Peloton rep moving the Tread+ to a room (where children or pets cannot access it) at no cost.
  • Peloton is implementing software improvements to the product to automatically lock the Tread+ after each use and prevent unauthorized access by assigning a 4-digit passcode that will be required to unlock the Tread+.
