Originating from Southern India, the dried ripe seeds of cardamom offer incredible benefits to the body. Known as the “Mother of Spices”, the seeds are aromatic and help ease indigestion. A member of the ginger family, elaichi or cardamom has antiseptic, aphrodisiac, digestive properties. It is also used as a stimulant. Cardamom lifts the spirits and induces a calm meditative state. It eases tension and anxiety, lethargy and nervous exhaustion, and improves memory and concentration. But, did you know this little pod of fragrance is also beneficial for the skin? We got in touch with Pooja Nagdev, an aromatherapist/cosmetologist and the founder of Inatur to know how one can use cardamom to deal with skin issues and this is what she had to say.

“Cardamom oil stimulates blood flow to the skin and removes blemishes, resulting in a more radiant complexion. It helps in giving you a clearer and even complexion. It makes your skin even toned and also can improve your skin complexion,” says Pooja.

Anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory: Cardamom contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The result is healthier skin since cardamom fights bacteria and other microorganisms while reducing swelling in the skin.

Treats skin allergies. Due to its antiseptic capabilities, cardamom works well in soaps to cleanse and soothe skin. This makes it perfect for treating skin allergies and irritations. Heals acne, clears out blemishes

Try these DIY using cardamom at home to brighten your skin tone and even out the complexion.

Raw milk, Oats and Cardamom mask- Take a tablespoon spoon of milk, add 2 teaspoon of oats powder and 1 teaspoon of cardamom to form a paste. Apply on the face and leave it for 10 minutes to rinse with cold water. This pack helps to even out the skin tone and bring firmness to the skin.

Cardamom and Honey Scrub- Take a teaspoon of honey, add cardamom powder to it. Mix it well and apply to the face. Leave it for a minute and then massage it to remove.

The takeaway here is that cardamom has so many health benefits and must be tried out in versatile ways to brighten our skin.
