Hot on the heels of Southwest Airlines’ two-for-one credit card deal, Amtrak has just launched a new promotion, the Valentine’s Buy-One-Get-One Free Sale, allowing companions to ride for free on most train routes. Here’s what you need to know.

How to get a free ride

The window to take advantage of the promotion is limited to just a few days, as you’ll have to make your purchase by next Tuesday, February 16. Customers can purchase a ticket that includes one free companion for nationwide travel between February 22 and August 27, using the code C214 at checkout or at amtrak.com/vdaysale.

Your companion has to be traveling on the same reservation and you must be traveling together. Upgrades to Acela First Class and non-Acela Business Class are valid upon payment of full accommodation charge. Upgrades to sleepers are not permitted, however. The offer can’t be combined with any other discount offer, either.

Popular lines like the Auto Train, Northeast Regional, Acela, Southwest Chief, Empire Builder, and the California Zephyr are available for this discount. The offer is not valid for the Amtrak Cascades, Pennsylvanian, Keystone Service, and 7000-8999 Thruways routes.

Following CDC guidelines, stick to essential travel

As travel increases the risk of spreading COVID, the CDC is asking that you delay travel, if you can. As with air travel, the CDC customers should review state-specific travel advisories and be aware of restrictions for their intended destinations.

While your safest bet is to not travel at all, Amtrak has put additional safety precautions in place:

  • Amtrak is aiming to get staff 100% vaccinated and is currently paying staff to get their shots, per Fox Business.
  • Per federal law and Amtrak policy, all customers and employees must wear a face mask or covering that fully covers the entire mouth and nose.
  • Bookings are limited on reserved trains to allow for more physical distancing. Individuals traveling alone may use the seat next to them for personal belongings.
  • Amtrak does a deep cleaning and sanitizing of its trains prior to service, with additional en-route cleaning to disinfect restrooms and frequently touched surfaces.
  • Protective plastic barriers have been installed at customer counters in stations and at countertops in café cars.
  • All Amtrak trains are equipped with onboard filtration systems with a fresh air exchange rate every four to five minutes.
