Most of us would think (or, have been taught) that from clothing to toys and even books, everything is gender-specific. There are certain socially “acceptable” things for both boys and girls and if they defy that, it means something is wrong with them. Kids need an open society to grow up in, not one which restricts them. So, rather than feeding them an idea that a clothing style is best reserved for one gender, allow them to have their own preference.
At the same time, experts believe that parents and guardians should work on destigmatizing stereotypes which exist solely with girls’ clothing choices. Equality needs to be brought in there too. Kids will have healthier self-esteem if you allow them to be themselves. So, the next time they make a face or say something about clothes or toys, retort back and say, “it’s for anyone who likes them”.
